A Strange Noise on Your Tesla Road Trip: What to Check First

10 years later. ❤️🇨🇦 Celebrating The Tragically H

10 years later. ❤️🇨🇦

Celebrating The Tragically Hip 10 years after that final show was also, for me, about finding a little closure.

I’ve carried two regrets from that final tour: not going to the second Vancouver show and not going to Kingston to experience what was happening there. Instead, I watched at home with close friends as 11.7 million Canadians (nearly one-third of the country) tuned in.

Ten years later, seeing so many people come together again helped put some of those regrets to rest. The sadness is still there, but this weekend there was a lot more joy.

For those outside Canada, it might seem strange that a travel account has posted so much about a rock band. But The Hip’s story is about far more than music.

It’s about friendship, family, love, loss and a country trying to understand itself. They sang about our towns, people and history while confronting some of Canada’s darker chapters.

Then there’s how the story ended.

Gord Downie was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. After surgery and treatment, while dealing with memory loss and speech challenges, he chose to go back on the road with his friends one last time.

He went from remembering almost none of his lyrics after surgery to relearning nearly 90 songs in months. A dying man went out on his own terms, touring Canada and saying goodbye through their songs.

If you’re unfamiliar with their story, watch the documentary on Amazon. It beautifully explains why these five friends became so intertwined with Canada.

As Canadians think more about who we are and what distinguishes us from our much larger neighbour to the south, I think we should be louder about celebrating what’s uniquely ours: our music, artists, stories, communities and history.

Canada isn’t perfect, but our cultural identity matters.

The Hip understood that. They told Canadian stories on their own terms and somehow made them universal.

Thank you, Kingston. Thank you to The Tragically Hip. And thank you to JD and the TTH Podcast community for bringing us together.

Lastly, to the Gord above, “Hey man, thanks.” 🙏❤️🇨🇦

Porto completely won me over ❤️🇵🇹 Finding the rig

Porto completely won me over ❤️🇵🇹

Finding the right place to stay can make or break a trip, and Canto de Luz was one of those rare hotels I’ll remember long after leaving. Incredible breakfasts, beautiful suites, a peaceful garden oasis, and some of the warmest hospitality I experienced in Portugal.

The highlight? Joining the Canto Cooking market tour, wine tasting, and Portuguese tapas cooking class. Shopping at Mercado do Bolhão before learning to cook traditional dishes made for one of the most memorable experiences of my time in Porto.

If you’re planning a trip to Porto, I’ve just published my full reviews of both the hotel and cooking class over on This Life in Trips (link in bio).

Have you been to Porto? What’s the best hotel or food experience you’ve had there?

Ever wonder what Quito tastes like beyond the guidebooks? 🇪🇨

From crispy empanadas to rich Ecuadorian chocolate, wandering through Old Town is just as much about flavor as it is history. Every corner has something cooking—and every stop tells a story.

If you’re planning a visit, this walking food tour is one of the easiest (and tastiest) ways to experience the culture firsthand.

Parksville done right 🌊 Stayed at Bayside Resort

Parksville done right 🌊

Stayed at Bayside Resort as part of a Vancouver Island loop and it couldn’t have worked out better. Right on the water, easy access to the beach, and perfectly located for exploring spots like Nanaimo, Coombs, and Qualicum Beach without having to keep moving hotels.

Waking up to ocean views and ending the day with sunsets from the balcony… hard to beat.

If you’re planning a Vancouver Island road trip, this is a great base to build around.

Laureles might be my favourite neighbourhood in Me

Laureles might be my favourite neighbourhood in Medellín 🇨🇴
Tree-lined streets, a relaxed local vibe, and no shortage of great cafés, bakeries, and restaurants. It felt way more lived-in and authentic than I expected.

This food tour was the perfect intro—walking between spots, trying local favourites, and even a little “go juice” along the way (aguardiente 😄). It gave a real feel for the neighbourhood beyond just eating.
