The Best Podcasts for Road Trips, Long Drives, and Commutes in Canada

With my new Model Y delivery day fast approaching I’ve been thinking about the long drive ahead. I am once again picking up out of province simply for the one-way adventure it adds. I’ve done three cross-country trips which made me realize that I have both covered a lot of Canada as well as Canadian podcasts along the way. With that, I thought I would share my list of the best podcasts for road trips so far and also put a call out for suggestions for my next trip.

Thunder Bay

Probably the most chilling part of my trip across Canada came while listening to Thunder Bay and its follow-up Return to Thunder Bay while visiting the area. This incredible documentary series digs into the city’s systematic racism and a blind eye toward aboriginal deaths and murders. I really like Thunder Bay and have enjoyed my time there and think shows like this are essential in exploring our fault, healing, and doing better. I highly recommend these podcasts to any Canadian, not necessarily those just road tripping through the area.

The White Saviours

It seems like there is no shortage of documentaries and movies on the We charity scandals but this one was one of the first. Brought to you by the same team that did Thunder Bay, The White Saviours is an engaging and entertaining portrayal of the rise and fall of We Charity founders Marc and Craig Kielburger. Another Canadian must.

Fully and Completely

When it comes to Canadian road trip music, what’s more fitting than The Tragically Hip?

Living up to its name, the Fully and Completely podcast takes a deep dive into every studio album along with the social and political climate at the time of the release. Hosts Greg and Jamie present this in an entertaining way and give super fans like myself something to dive into.

Smartless

Although not Canadian-made or on the subject of Canada, Smartless cohost and fellow canucklehead Will Arnett does his best to interject his love of home into the show. Co-hosts by Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett converse each week with a surprise guest that one of them brings in. Notable Canadian guests include Brendan Shanahan, Mike Myers, Seth Rogen, and Ryan Reynolds. The episode with Michael Moore also digs into Canadian topics and stories and it is worth a listen.

Episodes drop weekly with Wondery+ members getting early access.

Non-Canadian Content

The above podcasts are all great but the 5,000 km plus drive certainly calls for some filler. Here are some of my favourites so far:

Song Exploder

Ever wonder how your favourite artist came up with that catchy hook or lyric? Song Exploder breaks down just that.

Ron Burgundy Podcast

It’s Ron Burgundy, doing a podcast. What could go wrong?

The Office

I’m a big fan of The Office so listening to a podcast dedicated to the show is super interesting to me. Brian Baumgartner, AKA Kevin, hosts Off the Beat and Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey host The Office Ladies. On the last trip I would listen to a couple of episodes then, at night or while charging, watch the episode of the show on Netflix in my car. What a world we live in.

The Best Podcasts for Road Trips – Where to Listen?

Podcasts are readily available through a handful of apps including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Amazon Music. That said, I enjoy listening through Audible as membership gets you access to a massive catalog of audio books which are also great on long road trips.

I Need Your Suggestions!

Now that I have shared my list of the best podcasts for road trips, let me know your thoughts. My next road trip is coming up and I’m looking for a podcast to enjoy along the way. Any EV or Tesla ones would be interesting so if you have a suggestion let me know in the comments below.

Further than that, if a Tesla or EV podcast doesn’t fit what you are looking for, what would you like to hear in one? I’m considering starting one based around the continent I share on this site and I am curious if there is an audience for that. Again, let me know in the comments below!
