The minimalistic approach Tesla takes to its interiors may be sleek and elegant, but it’s not always practical. Digging through on-screen menus can be annoying, especially when simply trying to open a glove box. That’s where Tesla shortcut buttons can help.
I recently installed Yeslak’s Tesla Shortcut Buttons and Tesla USB Docking Station, and they have been game changers regarding convenience in my day-to-day driving. It has added both quick button functions and provided quick access to my Tesla USB ports. As such, I wanted to share my experience installing them and how I have used them so far.
In this post, we will break down what Tesla shortcut buttons are, why you would want to add them, the tools and materials needed to install Yeslak’s Shortcut Buttons and Dock, and tips for a successful installation. We will also share the difference between a center console dock with Tesla shortcut buttons versus S3XY Buttons, a product I already had in place.
Key Takeaways:
- Adding Tesla shortcut buttons can enhance your driving experience and make using your Tesla more convenient.
- Installation of these features requires basic tools and materials, and following a few simple steps can easily be done independently.
- Before securing the back console, test and ensure the buttons and USB ports work correctly.
What Are Tesla Shortcut Buttons?
In short, Tesla shortcut buttons are physical buttons that provide quick access to certain functions within Tesla vehicles that are typically found by digging through the on-screen menus.
The purpose of these shortcut buttons is to allow drivers and passengers to control essential features while minimizing distractions. Some products are programmable, allowing users to customize them to perform tasks like opening the trunk, adjusting climate settings, or activating autopilot with a single press.
This level of customization enhances the user experience and streamlines the process of interacting with the vehicle’s advanced functionalities.
What Are Tesla USB Ports?
Tesla USB ports allow users to connect external devices for charging or data transfer.
These ports are standard features in Tesla vehicles, enabling passengers to charge their smartphones, tablets, laptops, or any other gadgets without additional adapters.
The USB ports also serve as a gateway for users to access data stored on external drives, making it convenient to enjoy music or watch videos during long journeys. That said, the ports in the front of the car are not very accessible.
Yeslak’s Tesla Shortcut Buttons Docking Station
Yeslak’s Tesla Shortcut Buttons is a docking station that fits seamlessly into the center console of Tesla Model 3/Y vehicles. On top of adding three Tesla shortcut buttons to the console surface, it also makes accessing your Tesla USB ports so much easier. It includes a USB C port on the surface and a pass-through section for physical USB cables.
On top of that, the unit also includes a handy light that comes on when the center console is open.
Yeslak Tesla Shortcut Button Functions
Out of the box, the buttons on Yeslak’s dock provide the following functions:
- Open front and rear trunk
- Preheating the battery
- Open the Glove Box
- Folding side mirrors
- Passenger door open
- Back door open (right & left side)
- Interior reading lights
These buttons are reportedly programmable; however, it seems a bit complicated. More on that below.
Tesla Shortcut Buttons Docking Station Installation
Installing the Yeslak dock is straightforward and should only take 10 minutes. It involves connecting a Plug&Play CAN wiring harness under the rear vent at the back of the center console.
Tools:
Everything you need for installation comes in the box. This includes the dock, CAN wiring harness, USB male-to-male cable, and a small pry bar.
Steps:
Now that you have everything you need, here’s a quick rundown on installing these Tesla buttons and USB hub docking stations.
1) First, power off the car through the center console screen.
2) Using the pry bar, remove the rear panel of the center console. Start in the middle below the vents.
3) Using the prong side of the pry bar, remove the pin holding the trim in place and set it aside.
4) Unclip the harness and place the Yeslak one inline.
5) Pull back the trim to conceal the controller dongle attached to the harnesses. This may take a little effort.
6) Test all buttons before replacing the pin and rear cover, and ensure the USB port provides power.

Thoughts On Yeslak’s Docking Station
Installing these Tesla buttons was quick and easy, and the way the dock seamlessly fits into the console is very slick. The buttons and their functions were all very responsive, and having a USB port that is easily accessible makes charging my devices a little less cumbersome.
I can see the open door function being particularly useful for ride-share drivers as there would be less fumbling with handles and buttons. There’s also the bonus of preventing passengers from pulling the emergency door release.
Personally, I love the ability to fold my mirrors with a button. My spot at home is very tight, so I constantly fold and unfold my mirrors. Having this function at the click of a button makes this daily task that much better.
That said, I prefer using S3XY Buttons because they are more flexible, both in button placement and available options. Yeslak Tesla buttons are reportedly programmable; however, it seems a bit involved at this stage.
Still, if you are looking for basic commands with the added bonus of USB port accessibility, this is a great buy.
Center Console Dock vs. S3XY Buttons
The Center Console Dock and S3XY Buttons are aftermarket accessories designed to enhance the interior functionality and aesthetics of Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles.
While the Center Console Dock provides a sleek solution that fits seamlessly into your center console, the S3XY Buttons offer wireless buttons that you can place throughout the vehicle and are highly customizable.
The Center Console Dock allows for better access to the Tesla USB ports by adding one to the top of the console and including a slot to pass cables through. This prevents opening the console to plug a device in.
So, if you are looking for basic commands with the added bonus of accessing your USB ports, get Yeslak’s Tesla Shortcut Buttons. If you want to take the buttons several steps further, get a set of S3XY Buttons.

What Are Some Tips for Installing Tesla Shortcut Buttons?
To make your installation go as smoothly as possible, follow these tips.
Tip 1: Use a Trim Removal Tool
Use a Trim Removal Tool to ensure proper access and secure attachment when installing the harness.
The Trim Removal Tool allows for precise and careful trim removal, minimizing the chances of scratches or dents that could occur with alternative methods. This tool is a must-have for anyone looking to customize their Tesla Model 3 or Y with add-on accessories like these Tesla buttons or expanding Tesla USB ports.
Tip 2: Test the Buttons and USB Ports Before Securing in Place
Before closing up the back of the console, be sure to test the functionality of the Tesla buttons and USB ports.
Verify that all buttons on the docking station are responsive and functional, and test the USB ports for charging capabilities. By conducting these tests, users can identify potential issues before closing up the cover.
