Do you get annoyed when your phone key fails to unlock your card? This Tesla ring key might save you some frustration.
The Tesla smartphone key is a beautiful thing. You literally walk up to your car, open the door, and drive away. When parked and walking away, your car locks once your phone is out of range. No need for keys or lock buttons which has made traditional car keys a thing of the past.
That said, there are scenarios where this solution doesn’t work. Auto unlock can be intermittent and for me, it’s in my parking garage. I often pull the handle and nothing, just the notification that I am now being captured on camera through sentry mode. I have to pull up my phone, open the app or pull out my key card to unlock the car. If only there was a better way…
What’s a Tesla Ring Key?
Thanks to NFC technology, Tesla keys can be programmed into phones, key cards, and really anything with an NFC chip. This is where the Tesla key ring comes in.
The fine folks at CNICK have placed a NFC chips inside beautifully crafted rings. They come in a variety of styles and series including wood and ceramic. I went with the Ebony wood finish and love the look.
CNICK Tesla Key Ring Features
On top of looking great and acting as a backup key for your Tesla, these rings have a couple key feature;
- No charging required –> This means even if your phone dies you can still get in your car.
- They are waterproof –> Again, advantage Tesla ring.
- They are discrete –> Unlike your Tesla card or phone App that can clearly be tied to your car, Tesla rings look like ordinary rings.
How to Set up a Tesla Key Ring
Setting up a Tesla ring is as easy as pairing a new key card or phone key.
First, on the Tesla screen, tap “Locks.” From there, click add. Next, place the key on the centre console location where you tap the key card (just behind the cupholders.) To finish the pairing, confirm the new key by placing your Tesla key card in the same centre console location. Name your key ring for ease of management and you are set!
How to Use a Tesla Key Ring
Using your Tesla key ring is the same as using your key card. Instead of holding the card under the camera on the door so, use the ring. Once detected, the car will honk, the lights will flash, and the door will unlock.
Tip: There is no need to physically tap the ring on the glass below the camera. Instead, make a fist when touching the car. This will keep the ring from scratching the glass and vice versa.
If your phone key is present, you can get in and drive away. If no phone key on you, all you have to do is tap the location on the console (just like tapping a Tesla card), again using a fist, and away you go.
Final Thoughts
After a week of using this Tesla key ring I have had no issues getting into my car. Ultimately, the Tesla key ring solves a minor annoyance I have with my phone not unlocking my car but an annoyance nonetheless. Technology, after all, is great…except when it isn’t. These scenarios can be maddening. As such, it has now become one of my favourite Tesla accessories.
On top of that, I am not someone who normally wears a ring but have enjoyed the look. I have received plenty of comments already…then I tell them it’s my car keys and minds are blown 🤯.
The Tesla ring starts at $99 and are available for order online. Before ordering, I highly recommend confirming your ring size first. I used this cheap ring sizer from Amazon before placing my order for the Tesla ring.

August 24, 2023 at 5:39 amThe ring works nicely with my Tesla Model Y but it is supposedly also to work with payments in Europe. This is done in collaboration with their partner Fidesmo, you download their app and then pair your Cnick ring and it’s here the problem starts (at least for me). The app says the ring is not recognised or supported!? Also, if you get it to work you have limited options for payment as it seems you need a “Curve” payment card. Support seems difficult to get from both Cnick and Fidesmo so at the moment it will serve as a 150Eur extra Tesla key.
